What the class is about:
Welcome to the study of the composition and properties of matter. With the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), our approach to teaching chemistry will differ from previous years. Our students will be challenged to think critically about science concepts while making connections and inferences of real-world phenomenon through experimentation and data analysis. Moreover, there will be emphasis placed on Earth science concepts and how they relate to chemistry.
Students in Pre-AP classes will receive an in-depth overview of chemistry which will include advanced qualitative and quantitative analysis of matter, its changes, and how they relate to the Earth's processes. The level of rigor will be higher in this course compared to CP, as it is intended to prepare students for the AP class should they chose to take it. We will be covering all the same concepts that are in the CP curriculum, and will go more in depth on these topics through high-level science and engineering practices, data analysis, and communication through written and oral reports. There is will also be a set of District Performance Tasks that Pre-AP scholar students must take in order to evaluate their understanding of the content.
In order to be successful in Pre-AP chemistry, students are expected to spend time outside of school preparing for class by studying and completing the assigned homework. It is recommended that you form study groups with your classmates; this practice not only improves everyone's understanding of the content, but it is also a good opportunity to build meaningful relationships.
