Lab Safety Contract:
The lab safety contract is a binding agreement between the parent, student, and teacher that all of the rules and regulations of the laboratory are understood and will be followed, no exceptions. A student cannot participate in any lab activity until it is signed by him/her, is signed his/her parent or guardian, and then returned to the teacher to be documented. Please see me to receive the contract if you did not receive one on the first day of school. If you're transferring from another teacher's class, I will get your already-signed contract from your previous teacher.
Lab Safety Regulations:
Safety in the lab is the number one priority! We will be working with open flames, electricity, and chemicals. Although these are approved for use in public schools, they are still potentially hazardous, can cause serious injury and, in the worst case, death if they're mishandled. As such, the safety regulations outlined below must be followed to the letter.
Failure to comply will result in the student receiving a safety citation at the teacher's discretion. I typically reserve these for major violations which include, but are not limited to, horseplay, gross negligence, intentional misuse of equipment and substances, not following directions, and using personal electronics when not directed. Minor violations like keeping goggles/aprons on and keeping the noise level down will only warrant gentle reminders; however, multiple minor infractions in a single lab period can result in a citation. What constitutes a major and minor offense is at the teacher's discretion. The consequences for a citation is loss of points on the lab assignment and a referral. If a student is cited for a major offense, he/she will receive an office referral, and will be removed from the lab. The student also may not participate in the next lab activity, in which case an alternate assignment will be given. If a student is cited for multiple minor violations, a low-level referral will be written and the student may not continue to do the rest of that day's experiment.
